Form PA1P: applying where there is a will
PA1P is the application an executor uses when the deceased left a valid will. It asks who is applying and on what authority, confirms the will and any codicils, sets out the deceased's details and estate value, and ends with a statement of truth signed by every applicant.

What PA1P asks for
- Your details as applicant, exactly as they appear in the will
- The deceased's full name, any alias used to hold assets, date of birth and date of death
- Their permanent address at death and their domicile
- Confirmation of the will, its date, and any codicils
- Whether any executor is renouncing or having power reserved
- The gross and net estate values, and the Inheritance Tax position
- How many office copies of the grant you want at £2 each
The statement of truth
Every applicant signs to confirm the information is true and that they will administer the estate properly. Signing carelessly is not a technicality: a false statement can be contempt of court, and executors are personally liable for distributing an estate incorrectly.
Do not touch the will
No staples, no paperclips, no pin holes, no removing anything already attached. Any mark suggesting a document was once attached triggers a requisition and an affidavit of plight and condition.Where PA1P applications go wrong
- Names that differ between the will, the death certificate and the asset holders, with no alias declared
- Gross and net figures that do not reconcile with the Inheritance Tax position
- An executor who has already intermeddled trying to renounce
- A photocopy sent instead of the original will

Frequently asked questions
- Who signs the PA1P?
- Every executor who is applying. Executors who are not applying either renounce or have power reserved, and this is declared on the form.
- What if the deceased used a different name?
- Declare the alias and the assets held in that name. The grant can then be issued in both names so asset holders will accept it.
- Can I amend a PA1P after submitting?
- You cannot edit a submitted application. The registry will raise a requisition asking you to confirm or correct the detail, which adds weeks.
