Where the money goes
The unavoidable cost is the court fee — £526 for estates over £5,000, nothing below it. Sealed copies of the grant cost £2 each when ordered with the application and £16 each afterwards, so ordering enough up front is the cheapest admin decision you will make.
Everything beyond that is a choice about help. Solicitors typically charge a percentage of the estate or an hourly rate for the same application, which is why the same grant can cost very different amounts depending on who fills in the forms.
